Preserving the Past, Driving Into the Future
How Southern Ride Customs Restores Vintage European Automobiles While Discreetly Integrating Modern Technology
Every classic automobile has a story. Whether it’s an Alfa Romeo Spider, a vintage Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Triumph, MG, Jaguar, BMW, or another European icob or even a truck - our philosophy is simple: preserve the character that made the vehicle special while thoughtfully integrating modern conveniences that make it enjoyable to own and drive today.
One of our current restoration projects—a 1981 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce—perfectly illustrates this philosophy. Rather than transforming the car into something it was never intended to be, we carefully modernize only where it improves the ownership experience, while respecting the craftsmanship and heritage of the original design.
Many enthusiasts are surprised to learn that the 1981 Spider shares numerous mechanical and structural components with Alfa Romeo Spiders produced well into the late 1980s and early 1990s. That interchangeability allows us to source excellent donor vehicles, preserving factory quality while reducing restoration costs. In many cases, a complete donor vehicle provides far more value than purchasing individual replacement parts because it includes original brackets, hardware, trim pieces, and assemblies that are increasingly difficult to locate.
One example is the later-model bumper system. An intact 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider can provide the integrated front and rear bumper assemblies that many owners prefer while still maintaining an unmistakably Alfa Romeo appearance. These conversions require careful planning and proper mounting hardware, but when completed correctly they retain the spirit of the original car.
Technology should enhance a classic—not dominate it. We often recommend installing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through a discreet head unit hidden inside the glove compartment, allowing the dashboard to remain visually original. Bluetooth connectivity, USB charging, hands-free calling, and modern navigation become available without sacrificing the vintage interior.
Audio upgrades receive the same treatment. Carefully selected speakers can be integrated into replacement door panels or other reversible locations, while a compact powered subwoofer can often be hidden beneath a seat. The result is significantly improved sound quality without filling the cabin or trunk with visible aftermarket equipment.
A modern backup camera is another worthwhile addition. Rather than mounting a visible display on the dashboard, we prefer using a replacement rearview mirror with an integrated display that appears only when reverse gear is selected. The system remains virtually invisible during normal driving while dramatically improving rearward visibility.
Whenever the interior is apart, we also recommend pre-wiring for future accessories such as heated or ventilated seats, USB-C charging, microphones for hands-free calling, or additional lighting. Planning ahead minimizes future labor and keeps installations clean and serviceable.
One question we occasionally receive is whether airbags can be added to a vehicle that was never designed with them. The answer is generally no. Modern airbag systems depend on engineered crumple zones, impact sensors, restraint control modules, and structural designs that simply do not exist in vintage automobiles. Attempting to retrofit airbags is rarely practical and can introduce significant safety concerns.
Instead, we focus on improvements that genuinely enhance safety: properly functioning three-point seat belts, premium tires, restored braking systems, upgraded lighting, and improved visibility. These upgrades increase driver confidence while respecting the engineering of the original vehicle.
At Southern Ride Customs, every restoration begins with one question: 'If this vehicle had continued evolving without losing its soul, what would it look like today?' That philosophy guides every decision we make.
Whether your project is an Alfa Romeo Spider, a classic Land Rover, an early Porsche, a Mercedes-Benz roadster, or another vintage European automobile, our goal remains the same: preserve authenticity, improve reliability, discreetly integrate modern conveniences, and create a vehicle that can be confidently enjoyed for decades to come.
Our Restoration Philosophy
• Preserve original character whenever possible.
• Use OEM donor components whenever practical.
• Make modern upgrades discreet and reversible.
• Improve reliability before adding cosmetic modifications.
• Prioritize meaningful safety improvements over gimmicks.
• Build each vehicle to be driven—not just displayed.
